Harlen D. Wheatley, Master Distiller of the Buffalo Trace Distillery, spent a decade with a small team of specialists creating what he considered the perfect vodka. A series of copper and stainless-steel stills, cookers and fermenters had to be designed and built specifically for the task.
The initial bottling required 159 separate distillations — CLIX, in Roman numerals — and the number became the name. It is a bourbon-maker's vodka: patience applied to a spirit the world assumes is simple.
Each year's release is limited to roughly 2,500 bottles, presented in a hand-formed, lead-free crystal decanter from Nouvel Studio within a handcrafted burl wood case, each individually numbered. The World Vodka Awards named it a category winner in 2019.
