William Larue Weller, born in 1825, was a pioneering Kentucky whiskey merchant and distiller. In 1849 he founded W.L. Weller & Brothers — later W.L. Weller & Sons — and made a decision that would quietly reshape bourbon: he replaced the rye in his mash bill with wheat, creating a softer, smoother style that set his whiskeys apart from everything around them.
Weller sold his whiskey under a plain promise — honest whiskey at an honest price — and marked his own barrels to guarantee it. That insistence on trust, as much as the wheat itself, is what the name has carried for more than a century and a half.
Today every Weller bourbon is made at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, still to the wheated recipe that started it all. The range runs from the gentle Special Reserve to the uncut Full Proof and, at its summit, the ultra-aged Millennium — one recipe, expressed with varying patience.
